Hours of Work: M-F, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

PURPOSE

Manage Tlingit & Haida’s daycare center, including daily operations, employee training and supervision, budget management, and grant implementation. Incumbent will ensure a safe learning environment based on regulatory standards. Develop curricula in collaboration with teaching staff and within Early Childhood Education Standards. Communicate with parents and promote the facility in the community.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports To: Cultural Heritage & Education Director

Supervises: Child Care Center Employees


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain the facility in accordance with State of Alaska licensing standards
  • Comply with local, state, and federal laws governing child care
  • Develop, create, and review official childcare policy and written administrative procedures and Parent handbook
  • Will work closely with the Department to develop and manage program budget
  • Develop strategies for marketing and promoting the Child Care Center
  • Participate in and lead meetings including but not limited to staff meetings, team meetings, leadership team meetings, professional development of staff, and community outreach meetings
  • Serve as primary contact for current and prospective families
  • Meet with staff/parent committees as needed, but at a minimum, quarterly
  • Monitor and resolve issues related to childcare ratios, educational requirements, licensing
  • Develop and maintain Child and Adult Care Food Program(CACFP)
  • Establish enrollment processes that ensure children are effectively and efficiently transition into classroom
  • Maintain center records (includes emergency drills; building, fire and sanitation inspections)
  • Oversee/approve orders of appropriate center supplies for provision of care and classroom materials and equipment
  • Ensure programming addresses the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth and development of the child
  • Assist staff to plan/implement a program designed to meet the needs of the whole child
  • Interview, supervise, evaluate, provide feedback for Child Care Center staff
  • Encourage educational growth of staff through, staff meetings, education courses, visitation to other centers, conferences and meetings
  • Represent the center in the community and act as a liaison with other agencies

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Fully versed in methods of Early childhood education
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum development
  • Considerable knowledge of the subcultures in the community, particularly as they may affect the children served by the center
  • Knowledge of community organization and resources
  • Knowledge of principles of health and safety, and ability to plan and direct an overall health and safety program for the Child Care Center
  • Excellent organizational, problem solving and time management skills
  • Familiarity with nutrition and food standards


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)

  • Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, child development, child psychology or related field (with emphasis on management)
  • Two years supervisory experience
  • Three years working with diverse groups in a facilitative or coordinator capacity
  • Valid Driver’s License


UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS

The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs.  Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
