PURPOSE
The Regional Resource Specialist will help build an Indigenous Guardian Network (IGN) across Southeast Alaska to implement projects that target traditional food, energy, natural resource, and economic sustainability. The incumbent will provide technical and social support to grow the capacity of Alaska Native residents of Southeast Alaska to achieve their goals for environmental stewardship.

Reports To: Environmental Coordinator
Supervises: N/A
Liaison To: N/A


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Establish and facilitate a community-driven governance model for the IGN to guide strategic direction
• Establish a Steering Committee to guide the work of the program
• Create draft charter documents and program goals
• Support communities and Tribes to develop capacity, participate in, and benefit from the IGN
• Work with the Steering Committee to identify and catalyze community-driven IGN activities
• Provide coaching, training, and tools to new and established IGN community catalysts
• Develop innovative stewardship approaches that build on communities’ unique cultures
• Stimulate shared stewardship activities through internal and external partnerships
• Identify and pursue funding opportunities for the IGN

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
• Experience working with Native population and rural communities
• Capacity to catalyze engagement and collaboration with people from diverse backgrounds
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Experience cultivating technical assistance and funding opportunities
• Ability to coordinate complex projects, budgets, and work across multiple disciplines
• Ability to network with various organizations, find common-ground solutions, and build collaborative partnerships
• Excellent written and verbal communication
• Demonstrated computer skills using Microsoft Office products


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• 3 years’ experience in natural resource or network management, community development, or related field
• Associates Degree in environmental or natural resource field
• 2 years’ experience at the Technician level in environmental or natural resource field
• Valid driver’s license

Substitution:
• Additional education in the environmental or natural resource field may be substituted for experience on a full-time equivalency basis


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• One-year experience in grant administration/grant writing
• One-year experience in training and curriculum design
• Familiarity with the Tlingit and Haida cultures: contemporary, traditional, political, and social
• Familiarity with the federal, state, and natural resource NGO partnerships in Southeast Alaska


UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS
The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs. Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
