The Assistant Controller will assist the Controller in managing the daily accounting functions, administer and coordinate Tlingit & Haida grant and general ledger accounting and reporting. Under direction of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), this position performs very complex financial accounting projects.

• Prepare complex, detailed monthly, quarterly, and closeout financial reports for external funding agencies
• Reconcile grant budget to actual expenditures and prepare, review and posts necessary adjusting journal entries to ensure that grants are not overspent and comply with reporting requirements
• Reconcile subsidiary accounts to assure proper accountability and reporting with outside agencies
• Determine the nature and extent of discrepancies and non-compliance and propose corrective action
• Review trial balance for correctness and compliance with external financial reporting requirements
• Propose appropriate corrective action for discrepancies and noncompliance
• Independently review and gain though understanding of external financial reporting requirements
• Communicate with funding agencies to seek clarification regarding requirements when necessary and works with grant managers to ensure compliance
• Document all communication as it relates to clarification of requirements
• Review the general ledger at the end of each month and prepares and posts adjusting journal entries
• Analyze complex financial data and assists in the preparation of comprehensive financial report for management
• Advise manager and administrative staff on the financial status of programs and individual accounts as necessary
• Meet monthly reporting deadlines and ensure the accuracy and completeness of the general ledger
• Communicate with Finance staff and program managers to coordinate the receipt of financial information necessary to ensure timely closing of the monthly general ledger
• Stay up to date on changes in the Uniform Guidance and ensure Tlingit & Haida is in compliance with requirements
• Assist in the preparation of audit work papers for the annual external financial statement audit
• Assist in the preparation of financial statements and provide information for inclusion in the footnotes to the financial statements
• Work with the auditors to clear audit exceptions
• Prepare supplemental schedules and reconciliations on an as needed basis during audit
• Meet audit deadlines to ensure the timely issuance of the annual audited financial statements
• Represent Finance department in the event of field audits by granting agencies
• Assist program managers in budget forecasting and modifications in grant reporting systems
• Approve and post imported journal entries and subsidiary module transactions
• Assist Controller with coordinating monthly and year end close
• Assist Controller with providing training to staff on accounting and financial reporting systems
• Prepare calculations and process drawdowns for grants
• Assist Controller with general ledger reconciliation
• Supervise technician level employees including but limited to hiring, monitoring, coaching, staff development, evaluations, dispute resolution, progressive discipline, and if necessary, termination

• Ability to use an integrated accounting software system, Microsoft applications, and electronic transmitting applications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Accounting
• 3 years’ professional level experience as an Accountant
• 3 years’ experience with an automated accounting system
• 2 years’ supervisory experience
• Valid Driver’s License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• 2 years’ experience working with Sage Intacct


The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs.  Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
