PURPOSE
This position will coordinate and conduct business and economic development activities; facilitate development of entrepreneurs and businesses in Tribal communities; and will secure funding and fulfill reporting requirements for the business development programs of the Business and Economic Development (BED) Department.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports To: BED Director
Supervises: N/A
Liaison To: JEDC, BIA, SVA and other agencies

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Coordinates day to day operations of departments business development program(s)
• Responsible for grant writing to sustain business development programs(s) and achieve their goals
• Responsible for coordination of the business development program budget(s), including but not limited to development, monitoring expenditures, and filing necessary financial reports with funding agency
• Works closely with BED Director to develop an overall funding strategy
• Develops and maintain s BED annual grants calendar
• Serves as project coordinator on capital projects such as the Cultural Immersion Park
• Serves as point person for planning and executing external events and advance the mission and vision of Tlingit & Haida
• Serves on internal committees as requested to promote BED activities, partnerships and goals
• Develops a relationship matrix for Tlingit & Haida
• Works closely with the BED Director to develop annual BED work calendar(s) based off the 2017-2027 Strategic Plan
• Research best practices for corporate/tribal culture programs
• Research giving tribal giving programs
• Scans for business opportunities and conducts feasibility studies
• Evaluates business proposals brought before Tlingit & Haida
• Develops feasible projects, including 8(a) SBD-related proposals
• Provides technical support to Tlingit and Haida departments and enterprises in grant writing and business development
• Creates and manages strategic relationships and alliances with other entities, and seeks ways to leverage existing resources to expand products, services, functionality and/or market reach of Tlingit & Haida enterprises
• Coordinates programs to develop entrepreneurship and businesses in Tribal communities
• Secures funding for such programs through grants and other sources
• Helps local businesses attain access to financing
• Delivers entrepreneurship and small business training
• Facilitates training that matches the occupational structure of the labor demand
• Establishes working relationships with experts and practitioners in various fields
• Builds partnerships with Tlingit & Haida departments and external entities
• Works closely with the Alaska Economic Development Representative and other EDA-SRO staff to facilitate investments into Tribal entities and local businesses
• Secures funding for BED activities through grants and other sources
• Prepares reports, including those that are required by various granting agencies
• Develops bid proposals
• Provides technical assistance or grant application assistance to Tribal entities or Tribal members
• Maintains client confidentiality
• Performs other duties as assigned

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
• Excellent understanding of business planning, business management, basic accounting, bookkeeping, financing principles, and financial reporting
• Ability to conduct basic training on topics from the abovementioned categories
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently with little supervision
• Ability to develop and implement monthly and annual plans
• Cross cultural sensitivity
• Ability to motivate and encourage through positive personal example and interpersonal communications
• Ability to speak clearly and effectively and handle with courtesy and tact a variety of public encounters, both on the phone and in person. Skilled in facilitating public meetings and comfortable with public speaking
• Understanding of business planning process
• Understanding of grants development and grant application/submissions processes
• Ability to maintain client confidentiality
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal explanation; ability to analyze situations accurately and take effective action; ability to function with a high degree of independence and work cooperatively with others
• Ability to use personal computer to develop reports, plans and create financial projections
• Excellent computer skills including all Microsoft office suite programs

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Associates Degree in Business or a closely related field
• Two years’ experience as a specialist or equivalent position, in a related field
• Two years of supervisory experience
• Valid driver’s license

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration

UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS
The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs. Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
