PURPOSE
The Benefits Specialist is responsible for assisting with the administration of benefit and retirement programs offered by the Tribe. The incumbent will be the primary contact for employees and providers regarding issues involving health insurance, employee assistance, and retirement plan(s).

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports To: Human Resources Director
Supervises: None
Liaison To: Employees, Retirement and Benefits Providers

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Oversee employee health insurance plans
• Administer Employee Assistance Program
• Assist employees in filling out paperwork
• Assist in facilitating Benefits fair
• Explain benefit plans in a one-on-one or group setting
• Distribute benefits enrollment materials and determine eligibility
• Enroll employees with carriers and process life status changes
• Respond to benefits inquiries from employees on plan provisions, benefit enrollment, status changes, and general inquiries
• Process and administer all leave-of-absence requests and disability paperwork: medical, personal, disability, WC, FML, and PALE
• Respond to retirement inquiries from managers and employees and assist with desired enrollment, plan changes, and contribution amounts
• Assist with open enrollment process
• Provide necessary reports for allocation/billing charges

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
• Maintain current knowledge of employee benefits options
• Remain current on applicable laws
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to work independently and prioritize workload
• Ability to organize, plan, and maintain confidential records
• Ability to search, select, compile, and summarize data and information
• Ability to compare data for completeness, identify any discrepancies or inaccuracies, and make the necessary corrections

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Associate Degree in HR or related field
• 2 years related experience

 

Substitution for Associate
• 4 years related experience

 

UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS
The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs. Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
