PURPOSE

The incumbent, under the direction of the Court Administrator, will provide development and coordination for the Adult Drug Court Program through the Tlingit & Haida Court system. This position is fully grant funded through a 3-year Department of Justice grant and the successful candidate will be required to provide the specific programs and activities outlined in the grant award.

Reports To: Court Administrator

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Work collaboratively with the Civil Diversion Team and Court Staff in the development of programs that provide services for at risk adults struggling with drug or alcohol issues and facing criminal sanctions

• Monitor and provide professional level oversight on civil diversion cases

• Responsible for overall program management which includes, preparation of technical reports, reporting on outcomes, and ensuring program adherence to grant(s) requirements

• Work with program participants and their families and provide referrals for family and/or social services

• Represent the tribe at meetings with Local, State, and Federal agencies, Court Systems, School officials, other Tlingit & Haida programs

• Establish, improve, and maintain the Adult Drug Court Program within the Tlingit & Haida Court system

• Coordinate with and assist local, State and Tribal organizations and communities, under the supervision of the Court Administrator, in the expansion of the Tlingit & Haida Court system to better serve the needs of at risk citizens and their families

• Complete appropriate training

• Perform other duties as assigned

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

• Working knowledge of the Criminal Justice system: Tribal, State, and Federal laws and policies that affect Adults

• Working knowledge and/or experience with adults with alcohol or substance abuse issues

• Cultural sensitivity to Alaska Natives in general, and Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian, in particular

• Experience in a State or Tribal Judicial system, and extensive knowledge about jurisdiction, Tribal sovereignty and local, state and tribal governments

• Knowledge of resources that can be called upon for assistance in the fields of at risk adults, education, health services, alcoholism, mental health, childhood trauma, FASD and restorative justice trends

• Ability to develop and write clear reports, both technical and non-technical

• Knowledge of criminal justice, social work practice and community organization

• Maintain strict confidentiality 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)

• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or social work or related field

• Three years of specialized experience working with adult and/or the judicial system

• Valid Alaska Driver’s License

UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS

The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs.  Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
